The newspaper companies are having a huge problem regarding selling printed copes of newspaper magazine on one hand and displaying news on their websites before they are in the printed eddition. There is a lot of solutions regarding micropayments, payed content etc...that could save the whole news industry. But all of them have the one big issue. They still need to put the news on the website the minute it happens. If not readers go to read it somewhere else. But than again if we have the news on the internet who would read it again in the newspaper the next day. Of course there is a big benefit regarding the intimacy of reading newspaper over a morning coffee...but wait is not that the solution?
Basic concept
Yes we love to read we love our little intimate privacy. But what to read? Fresh news are absolute, yesterday news...are from yesterday. But it all depends on the content concept. Yes you need to have the news on the website the minute it happens (email upload considered), but interesting enough if news are interesting you would read indepth research of the same news the day after. And that is the whole idea. Editors and journalist can be easily connected with the people around the news bringing back the depth story with interviews and a better story. Thinking beyond the news. Bring in the storyes. For that kind of story you would be prepared to pay. Why? Because it's the same concept as in a weekly magazines that we do pay for. Simple.
Website concept
Because of the evolving internet and all the display media connected to that we can make a step forward in news web design. A clean and easy to read art direction was used to design the concept. Reading and finding the news you are interesting in is the most important.A liquid layout of the headline news allows to display more news at once. Adapting the visual look and feel from ipad to big screen monitors.Even the advertising space fits inside the grid layout giving advertisers bigger and more visable space that is not pushed outside content.
Art direction
The concept is a bit radical at start but when users would get used to it they wold see all the benefits of it. The hierarchy and consistency on displaying news would stay intact. Ass little graphical elementals is used as possible to reach the demanding fast load and bringing the news as the prime focus element . We solved the hierarchy with adopting size and color.
Landing page
Adapting the important news section regarding the position and size of it. A simple but perfect 6 grid layout is used. We would display news as it happens (thinking about email upload, content and images). Adding content and inside stores as they developed (payed - code on the printed newspaper or micropayment). The hue 300*600px banner is placed inside the content working well also in the liquid layout. A huge benefit for having a huge traffic is a moderated forum always included beside the news giving users an ability to debate beyond comments.
Inside pages
Still following the liquid concept and displaying more sorties at once. Second navigation is simple and can have a multiple submenus.
Reading page
The layout is no longer liquid because of the readability issues. All standard content is displayed with images, related content, comments and share icons. We managed to implement another small banner push below the share icons (social media is big especially in shearing) being in the focus. We can implement the hashtag function for faster browsing relevant content and content from the same author. An user regulated spam control is on the comments. Thinking beyond comments a larger debate is followed in the moderated forum by the author. Photograph are tagged and therefore easily followed.
Google map is connected to every news making an interesting view of the geolocation stores. Timestamp has become on interesting way of displaying what is happening but we also believe google mashup can be a good interesting.
Mobile
We all read the latest things trough mobile devices. A simple interface is used to display most important headlines as fast as possible. On all mobile platforms from mobile web to touch sites.
Conslusion
We believe it is possible to make a good design concept even for such a demanding client. Design that can adapt easily to all fast changes on the web but still standing out from all others maintaining the brand directions.
